A list of some of my favorite comic books!
Comic books have greatly influenced my personal art. I've never been as much into the stereotypical superheroes, though I love some of them - independent graphic novels and storylines have captured my interest for years. Here are a few of my favorites!
Deadly Class
Created by Rick Remender, Wes Craig, & Lee Loughridge
A high school where they train deadly assassins, each characters is stylized after a genre of music, and it's set in San Francisco! This comic is beautifully done. The colors, the layout, and the story completely capture you!
The Sandman
Written by Neil Gaiman
My first love. This comic changed me as a person. It's deep philosophical statements on religion, life, and dreams left my angsty teenage self full of wonderment. Rather than one story arch, this one has many stories. The art varies from each storyline and melds and shifts just like our dreams.
Pretty Deadly
Created by Kelly Sue DeConnick & Emma RÃos
Death's daughter is a badass in this and strong women are featured - written and illustrated by women. This comic book is complex and requires several reads to get the nuance. You could read it again and again and still discover more. Not to mention, I'm a sucker for a good western!
Sex Criminals
Created by Matt Fraction & Chip Zdarsky
Humor is essential to a decent life. Be wary of anyone or anything that takes itself too seriously. This comic is hilarious; time bandits, orgasms stopping time, meta moments, etc! It is definitely one that causes you to laugh out loud. Just be careful reading it in public, it's got a lot of sex... a lot of weird, hilarious sex.
